EXCLUSIVE: Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder performs for a purpose in ‘Matter of Time’ trailer

When Eddie Vedder took the stage in 2023 for a series of concerts in Seattle, he did it for a good cause.
The Pearl Jam frontman’s shows were organized to raise funds for clinical research for epidermolysis bullosa — they were also recorded for a new documentary, “Matter of Time.”
TODAY.com has the exclusive look at the new trailer that shows the rock star preparing for his October 2023 shows and performing while also showcasing the people who will benefit from the funds raised.
“The goal is treatments. The goal is ultimately a cure,” Eddie Vedder says in the trailer. “It brings a sense of hope that feels like just a matter of time.”
All proceeds from these concerts went directly to EB Research Partnership (EBRP).
Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a rare condition that causes fragile, blistering skin, according to Mayo Clinic.
The blisters “may appear in response to minor injury, even from heat, rubbing or scratching. In severe cases, the blisters may occur inside the body, such as the lining of the mouth or stomach,” per Mayo Clinic. EB is inherited and has no cure, “but mild forms may improve with age. Treatment focuses on caring for blisters and preventing new ones.”
Eddie Vedder and wife Jill Vedder’s involvement stemmed from a personal connection. Jill Vedder’s childhood friend’s son was born with EB, inspiring the couple to take action and use the musician’s platform to raise awareness and funds for research.
“Getting involved with EB and EB Research Partnership, I don’t think it was a choice. It chose us. This community, you are immediately taken by the amount of strength and dedication on a daily basis to overcome obstacles that we can’t even imagine,” Eddie Vedder says in an exclusive statement given to TODAY.com. “When you see the intense pain that these kids go through, you imagine what it must do to the hearts of the parents, and there does become a timeline.”
Eddie Vedder adds that it’s hard not to want to dedicate a large portion of his life to doing whatever he can to help.
“It’s so special to be playing for a purpose, the purpose being this incredible mission,” he states.
“Matter of Time” chronicles the fight to cure EB, set against the backdrop of one of Eddie Vedder’s benefit concerts, while weaving in personal stories from patients and families and more.
“Matter of Time” will premiere June 12 at the Tribeca Festival, which will include a post-screening intimate acoustic performance by Eddie Vedder himself.
